Kako: My Sullen Past

Each and every day, Kako stares sullenly at the canal in her Shinagawa neighborhood. She already knows that her future holds nothing of interest in store.

One day, Kako's aunt Mikiko, who was supposed to have died in a house explosion 16 years ago, suddenly shows up. Kako resents Mikiko's smug sense of entitlement, but upon hearing about Mikiko's younger days as a radical bomb maker begins to admire her.

Mikiko takes Kako and her niece Kana on a nocturnal boat trip along the canal, to a small island out in Tokyo Bay. At the site of some ruins, they dig up a supply of saltpeter used for bomb-making. Days later, they carry out a detonation test and Mikiko makes a confession.

Kako takes up bomb-making herself but doesn't know what to do with them. She begins to suspect Mikiko will disappear again. “Take me with you,” she pleads.
