HANAGATAMI

Feature film adaptation of the script penned by director Nobuhiko Obayashi prior to his 1977 debut film HOUSE. Culminates his "wartime trilogy" together with Casting Blossoms to the Sky and Seven Weeks.

STORY

Spring 1941. Toshihiko (Shunsuke Kubozuka) shows up at the home of his aunt (Takako Tokiwa) in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. He entertains a crush on his tubercular cousin Mina (Honoka Yahagi) while reveling in “depraved” adolescence with the girls and indulging in bravery-testing escapades with his school buddies. Meanwhile, the Pacific War erupts.
