Beyond Time and Space with Ukiyo-e

A documentary that follows a traditional ukiyo-e print publisher inheriting centuries-old techniques, as they collaborate with world-renowned
contemporary artists to take on the challenge of creating a "modern ukiyo-e."

STORY

Artisans at the Adachi Institute of Woodblock Prints create ukiyo-e prints with a commitment to honoring the traditional techniques of the art from originating in the Edo period (1603-1868). With the number of artisans rapidly decreasing, Adachi launched a major initiative that invites world-class artists to assist in the creation of "modern ukiyo-e." Some 38 artists including Yayoi Kusama, Lee Ufan, and Nick Walker are taking part. This film follows the challenges faced by carvers and printers as they confront diverse forms of expression.
